Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, N.C - Nick Thompson stroked his fifth home run of the season and Jesse Morris pitched seven innings, allowing only two runs as Edenton (16-4) hung on for a 4-2 win over the Wilson Tobs (10-9) for their 12th straight win at Historic Hicks Field on Thursday Night.
Jesse Morris (Wofford College) made his fourth and final start of the summer for Edenton, taking on the Wilson Tobs, who sent JT Brubaker to the mound for the fourth time as a starter and second time against the Steamers.
The Tobs took an early 1-0 lead on a single by Ridge Gonsoulian, who scampered up to second on the play when Dominic Fratantuono (Towson University) misplayed the ball in right field. After two quick outs, Jimmy Luppens picked up his first RBI of the summer with a double, plating Gonsoulian.
Including the final out in the top of the first inning, Morris proceeded to retire the next 13 straight Tobs until a solo home run in the top of the sixth by Kevin Jordan snapped the streak.
After being retired post haste in the bottom of the first, Edenton tied the game 1-1 in the home half of the second. Trent Miller (Middle Tennessee State University) walked with one out and two batters later Jacob Reese (Eastern Illinois University) hit a two-out single to score Miller and tie the game. For Reese it was his third RBI of the season.
The solo home run off the bat of Jordan gave Wilson a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth.
Against Brubaker, Edenton reclaimed the lead in the home half of the sixth. Josh Hampton (Wilmington University) singled to begin the inning, followed by a Trent Miller single and then Nick Thompson (East Carolina University) stepped up and hit a BB to dead center field for a three-run home run that gave Edenton a 4-2 lead. The long ball was Thompson's fifth of the season and it pushed him to the top of the leader board in the category.
Morris was electric for Edenton, pitching seven innings and relinquishing just four hits and two runs (one earned), while walking one batter and fanning ten to earn his third win of the season.
After a perfect eighth inning by Rohn Pierce (Canisius College), the Tobs loaded the bases in the ninth against David Hart (University of California - San Diego) and coach Bryan Hill went to his bullpen.
Emerging was Jake McCoy (College of the Desert), who earned a save in last night's win. McCoy needed two pitches to get Collins Cuthrell to ground into the game ending double play.
Brubaker took the loss and fell to 2-2 while McCoy earned his fourth save of the season.
Edenton is back in action tomorrow night in Morehead City to try and win their 13th in a row, which would tie the CPL record for most consecutive wins during a season (2004 Steamers).
