Sharks Win on a Walk-Off in Extras

Wilmington, N.C. - The Wilmington Sharks came away with another extra inning win on Thursday night over the Columbia Blowfish 4-5 in 11 innings.

The Blowfish struck first as Eros Modena started of the game with a double and eventually scored on an RBI double off the bat of Allen Staton. The next hitter for the Blowfish David Houser gave the Blowfish a 2-0 lead as he hit a double to score Staton. The blowfish picked up another run in the fifth to give them a 3-0 lead.

The Sharks came back in the bottom half of the fifth and got the bats rolling. Alex Perez and Zach MacAneney drew back to back walks and moved up 90 feet on a sac bunt from Alex Freedman. Perez scored on a wild pitch from Stuart Pound to cut the lead to 3-1. With two outs in the fifth inning Zach Stephens hit a towering two run home run over the left centerfield fence to tie up the game 3-3.

In the eighth inning the Sharks took the lead 4-3 on an RBI single through the right side off the bat of Alex Perez his fourth RBI of the year. In the top of the ninth inning with one out pinch hitter Erik Barber hit a solo home run to tie the game at 4-4.

In the 11th inning, MacAneney picked up his third hit of the night with a leadoff double and advanced to third on a sac bunt from Freedman. Cody Dolan hit a ball that went through the legs of Columbia's third baseman to give the Sharks a 5-4 victory and move their record to 10-8.

Zach MacAneney went 3-5 and Zach Stephens went 2-4 with a home run and two RBIs for the Sharks. Curt Britt went 2-5 for the Blowfish.

The Sharks go on the road Friday night to take on the Wilson Tobs with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.

The Wilmington Sharks are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1000 alumni drafted and 62 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their major league debut so far.
