CHICAGO, IL (Monday, February 2, 2004) - The Chicago Fire today has issued the following statement regarding goalkeeper Zach Thornton's signing with Portuguese club Benfica.

"Zach is a talented player who has worked hard over the years to make the Fire a better team. We wouldn't have won our many championships over the years without Zach in goal and we are forever grateful for his contributions on and off the field," said Fire GM Peter Wilt. "We respect Zach's decision and wish him continued success in his career.

"Henry Ring, (2nd round draft pick) former Fire Reserves goalkeeper Matt Pickens and other goalkeepers we bring in will compete for the starting position. We will use the available money to try to extend the contracts of some of our talented young players including Damani Ralph. There is also a chance that Benfica would not renew Thornton's contract option in May, which would make him available again and provide the opportunity to bring him back to the Fire. We believe his return this year is unlikely, however, because we are certain Zach will show his new club the skill and leadership that made him successful for six seasons in Chicago."

A "Fire Original," the 30-year-old Thornton helped Chicago to four championships (MLS Cup '98 and 1998, 2000 and 2003 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups) and three conference titles (2000, 2001 and 2003). Chicago's all-time leader in game played (164), games started (162), and minutes played (14,735), Thornton also holds the MLS goalkeeper lead in wins with 91 (91-52-23) and ranks second all-time in shutouts (44). He was named the 1998 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year after posting a 16-8 record in Chicago's inaugural season in 1998, as he helped the Fire capture "The Double" (MLS Cup and U.S. Open Cup).

"I'd like to thank the Chicago Fire for all they've done for me and my career," said Thornton. "I made my debut at the MetroStars, but Chicago gave me the chance to play and I've really enjoyed playing there. The fans were amazing. The guys were amazing. It was a great experience and one that I will always remember. But now the opportunity has come up to join this new club and I'm looking forward to a new start. I hope to be back in Chicago and back in MLS one day."

Last season, in his sixth season with Chicago, Thornton was one of only two players to start and play in all 30 of Chicago's contests. The Baltimore, Maryland native registered an MLS-best 15 wins to go along with eight shutouts and helped the Fire to its first ever MLS Supporters Shield by virtue of recording the best overall regular season record (15-7-8, 53 points). Thornton was also named to the MLS All-Star squad (as Tim Howard's replacement) for the fifth time (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003) in 2003. He was drafted by Chicago in the sixth round (11th overall) of the 1997 MLS expansion draft.

"I'd like to wish Zach all the best in his new environment in Benfica," said Fire Head Coach Dave Sarachan. "We're sorry that he won't be with us and finish his career in Chicago. He had a tremendous year last year for me not only on the field, but off the field as well, bringing the team together. His leadership and skills will be missed and I wish him the best of luck."
