Peoria Rivermen News Release
PEORIA, Ill. (January 31, 2009) - Todd Ford made 35 saves, including six in overtime, to hold the Peoria Rivermen down in a 2-1 shootout win for the Texas Stars on Sunday evening at Carver Arena. He made three saves in the penalty shot tiebreaker to improve to 4-0-1 since being recalled from the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL.
Nicholas Drazenovic scored the only Rivermen goal and notched one of the two in the shootout. The Rivermen fell to 6-5 in shootouts this season. They are 1-3 in their last four shootouts, all since Jan. 1.
His goal staked the Rivermen a 1-0 lead at 16:07 of the first period. With Andrew Hutchinson off for hooking, Julian Talbot feathered a pass into the slot and Drazenovic fired a wrist shot off the left post and in. It was the 12th of the year for Drazenovic and second in his last four games.
The Stars quickly tied the game at 18:58 with a goal from Travis Morin. Matt Beaudoin created a turnover inside the offensive end and Morin ripped a shot past Toivonen on just the second shot of the period for the Stars.
Peoria outshot Texas 9-2 in the first and 14-7 in the second. Texas had the majority of their scoring chances in the third with 13 shots while they held the Rivermen to just seven. Through all of that the game went into overtime.
Scott McCulloch was whistled for a high-sticking double-minor with only 27 seconds remaining in regulation. The Rivermen failed to convert on a lengthy 4-on-3 in overtime but racked up six more shots. Peoria finished 1-for-4 on the power play while Texas was 0-for-2.
In the shootout, former Rivermen Ivan Vishnevskiy scored for Texas to put the Stars up 1-0 through the first two shooters. Pascal Pelletier evened the score with Peoria's third shot while Drazenovic and Colton Sceviour traded goals to send it tied into the fifth round. After Lars Eller was stuffed by Ford, Perrtu Lindgren beat Toivonen to end the game.
The Rivermen begin a four-game road trip on Wednesday in Houston at 7 p.m. The will meet the Stars again on Friday and Saturday down at the Cedar Park Center.
