Stars Nipped by Komets, 2-1

December 13, 2003 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Columbus Stars News Release

David-Alexandre Beaurgard scored the eventual game-winner at the 6:58 mark of the second period as Fort WayneÂ’s Kevin St. Pierre made 22 saves to make a 2-1 lead hold up over the Columbus Stars at the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum tonight. Goaltending ruled the day as St. Pierre and ColumbusÂ’ traded brilliant save after brilliant save.

Fort Wayne (12-7-2, 26 pts) got on the scoreboard first on a power play goal by Dustin Virag at the 15:52 mark of the first. Sean Venedam made the pass from the high slot that Virag pounded inside the far post from the face off circle to the right of StarsÂ’ netminder Greg Hewitt.

StarsÂ’ captain Nick Bootland even the score at one with his tip in off a Scott LevinsÂ’ shot at 17:40 of the opening period. Even Cheverie, who tallied the first hat trick in StarsÂ’ history Friday night against Missouri, was credited with the other assist.

Columbus (12-6-4, 28 pts) got 17 saves from Hewitt but could not do enough offensively to make him the winner. The Stars outshot the Komets 23-19 but fall to 1-3-1 against Fort Wayne for the year, the teams play twice more before the season ends.

The Stars hit the road for Missouri for a Sunday afternoon contest with the River Otters. The Stars play at home three times over the coming week, Wednesday night Quad City comes to Columbus, Friday Flint visits and Sunday the Port Huron Beacons play at the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum.
