Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
A power play goal in overtime settled it on a night when power play scoring was paramount; the Lincoln Stars came away with a 3-2 victory against the Waterloo Black Hawks at the Ice Box Friday.
Eero Teravainen scored eight seconds into an advantage, lifting a long shot through traffic inside the post to the left of Matej Tomek. The four-on-three goal came at 1:29 of extra time.
Only about half of the opening period had been played five-on-five, and each team scored twice. Waterloo went ahead during a power play at 4:18. Garrett Wait came through the right circle and whistled a shot to the top corner as traffic cleared in front of Tomas Vomacka. The lead lasted only 39 seconds before Gustaf Westlund scored the night's only five-on-five goal on his own rebound at the other end of the rink.
In the midst of a five minute major charging penalty to Joey Cassetti, Westlund scored again on the power play at 11:43; his shot from the left circle changed speed and direction on its way to the net.
Waterloo missed two five-on-three opportunities, but the Hawks capitalized five-on-four at 19:22. Jack Drury's shot from the right circle left an open side for Ben Copeland to score on a ricochet off Vomacka.
The second and third were scoreless, and played largely at full strength. Vomacka made 33 saves for the win, and Tomek stopped 30 shots.
The Hawks continue to travel the Western Conference on Saturday, visiting the Sioux City Musketeers at 7:05 p.m.
