Sioux Falls Stampede News Release

Urbandale, IA - The Sioux Falls Stampede got back in the win column with a 2-1 shootout victory at Buccaneer Arena Friday night against the Des Moines Buccaneers. Cameron Burke and Kevin Conley tallied goals in the shootout while Mikhail Berdin stopped both shooters he faced to help lead the Herd to victory. Berdin finished the night stopping 35 of 36 shots and adding an assist in his 17th victory of the season. The win kept the Stampede in third place in the West, just one point behind second place Waterloo. The Herd are now 9-1-2 in their last 12 games and have won 13 one-goal games this season.

After a scoreless first period in which the Stampede outshot the Bucs 11-8, things got physical and play picked up in the second. A heads up play from goaltender Mikhail Berdin would give the Herd the first goal of the game. After making a glove save, Berdin dropped the puck to his stick and sent a perfect pass across the ice to the Bucs bluleline to Adam Dawe who had just come out of the penalty box. Dawe grabbed the puck in mid-air, dropped it to his stick and broke in on a breakaway where he faked out the Bucs goaltender to give Sioux Falls a 1-0 lead at 10:07.

The celebration would be short-lived however, as the Bucs responded just over a minute later when Nick Leitner wristed a shot through traffic and past Berdin to tie the game 1-1. Things got heated late in the period when William MacKinnon cross checked Adam Dawe in the face which brought Artem Ivanyuzhenkov into the mix and the gloves dropped between MacKinnon and Ivanyuzhenkov. The game remained tied 1-1 heading into the third period.

Des Moines controlled play in much of the third period, outshooting the Herd 12-5, but Berdin was sharp all night and made some big saves, including an incredible glove save off a rebound in front of the net that would have given the Bucs the go ahead goal. The game would eventually head to overtime where both teams exchanged some great scoring chances, but it remained tied 1-1.

In the shootout the Stampede sent out newly acquired forward Cameron Burke to shoot first and Burke beat Bucs goaltender Roman Durny five-hole to give the Herd a 1-0 advantage. Berdin would then deny Julian Napravnik before Kevin Conley would score on a forehand shot in round two for the Stampede. The Bucs tried to keep things alive, but Berdin poke checked the puck away from Nicolas Werbik to secure the victory for the Herd.

Des Moines outshot the Herd 36-30 on the night and both teams finished the evening 0-for-3 on the power play.

The Stampede close out their five-game road swing Saturday night when they travel to Chicago to face the Steel at 7:05 PM. Fans can catch the game live on KELO News Talk 1320-AM, 107.9-FM and KELO.com starting at 6:40 PM with the Splash City pre-game show.
