Lincoln Stars News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Stars voyaged through wind and snow to square off against the Sioux Falls Stampede on New Years Eve 2018.
In the first period, both offenses rolled out slowly with Jaxson Stauber and Tyler Johnson trading a handful of saves throughout. Lincoln successfully killed off two penalties in the frame, but were undone on their first power play of the contest. After the second unit generated a few solid chances, just shy of the 16:00 mark, a turnover at center ice saw Blake Bride find a streaking Sam Stevens. Stevens, who's only prior goal came against Lincoln back in November, made a nifty move to beat Johnson on the breakaway, putting the Stampede up 1-0 in the first.
In the second, Stars mistakes cost them two goals early in the period. Anthony Romano sprung free and was led perfectly to the net by Artem Ivanyuzhenkov at 4:12 for an easy goal. Andre Lee struck next off a strong feed from Ethan Philips and Max Crozier at 8:35 to create a 3-1 lead. The Stars pushed back on a power play just past the midway point of the period. Seconds after it expired, Tristan Ashbrook took a check in the slot to make a play and found an open Josh Lopina for the Stars first goal. Lincoln pressured well through the remainder of the period, stopped only on a handful of strong saves made by Jaxson Stauber.
In the third, the Stars were able to draw within one after a good start to the period. Just past the halfway point, Mason Klee made a stellar move to gain space at the top of the zone and create a rebound off of Stauber. Devlin McCabe buried the puck for his sixth goal of the season, pulling the Stars back within one at 11:21. Lincoln's momentum would be erased on the very next shift. Ivanyuzhenkov weaved his way behind the last line of the Stars defense, drawing a penalty shot. He buried the chance to build a 4-2 lead that Lincoln would never overcome. When the clock hit zero, Sioux Falls took the two-goal win.
Lincoln returns to action next week when they travel to Waterloo on Saturday, January 5th for a 7:05 pm CST puck drop.
Later in the month, Faith & Family Day returns to The Ice Box for another matinee for an afternoon of faith and community as well as a post-game skate with the Stars. A portion of ticket sales for Faith & Family Day will benefit Food for the Hungry, a faith-based mission to build clean water solutions in third-world countries. Last year, the Stars and the Lincoln Stars Foundation helped to raise over $230,000 toward clean water initiatives in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.Looking for a belated holiday gift this season, or any season?
