Calgary Stampeders News Release

The Calgary Stampeders wrap up their 2016 pre-season schedule with a visit to BC Place and a date with the BC Lions on Friday. Kickoff is at 8 p.m. MDT.

It's the final chance for players to earn a roster spot as the active roster must be reduced to 46 by 10 a.m. on Sunday.

The Stamps dropped their pre-season opener 23-13 to the Edmonton Eskimos at McMahon Stadium on Saturday while on the same night the BC Lions picked up a 28-16 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Regina.

Friday's contest is a coaching matchup of two longtime associates.

Wally Buono returns to the Lions sideline after a four-year absence during which he served as the team's general manager. Buono coached the Stampeders from 1990-2002 and is the franchise's all-time leader in wins. He previously coached the Lions from 2003-11.

From 1997-2000 in Calgary and from 2003-07 in BC, one of Buono's players was quarterback Dave Dickenson, who is in his first season as head coach of the Stamps. Dickenson and Buono won two Grey Cups together - in 1998 with the Stamps and in 2006 with the Lions, with Dickenson earning MVP honours in the latter championship.

The Stamps and Lions have faced off in pre-season action the past two seasons as Calgary claimed a 20-6 victory at McMahon in 2015 and BC came out on top at home in 2014 by a score of 37-13.

Calgary will head right back to the West Coast to open up Week 1 with another matchup against BC on Saturday, June 25.
