Calgary Stampeders News Release
The Calgary Stampeders ask their fans to remember the less-fortunate members of the community who don't have suitable winter wear as the club launches its 12th annual Share the Warmth coat drive in support of The Salvation Army.
This year's drive is once again supported by radio station Q107, Calgary's Classic Rock - The Jeff & Sarah Show.
The official collection will take place during the Nov. 1 game at McMahon Stadium as the Stamps play host to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers but fans can make donations prior to date by dropping coats off at the Q107 donation box on the second floor of Eau Claire Market (200 Barclay Parade SW).
"I'm so proud to be involved with this program and it's been amazing to see how Stamps fans have supported the Coat Drive over the years," said Stampeders quarterback Drew Tate, the team representative for the coat drive since 2011. "I look forward to another successful coat drive this year."
"For many of us, we have a multiple coats in our closet to choose from," said Captain Pam Goodyear, Divisional Secretary for Public Relations and Development for The Salvation Army. "But for some Calgarians, a warm coat is something they can only dream about. Let's make their dream a reality by donating those coats we haven't worn in a while."
The Stamps are pleased to partner with Q107 for the Coat Drive for a second consecutive year.
"Funny story," said Sarah Crosbie, who along with Jeff Brown co-hosts the Q107 morning program. :Jeff grabbed his daughter's new coat last year and brought it to the coat drive. This year, he donated his wife's coat. (She doesn't know that yet!) We are thrilled to partner again with the Stampeders and the Salvation Army."
The Stamps are also encouraging local schools to get involved by donating new or gently used winter coats.
"We thought this would be a great opportunity to engage students in a practical way about the importance of giving back to their community," said Stampeders president Gordon Norrie.
So far, 15 schools have decided to participate in this year's drive, with more schools responding daily. The school that collects the most coats will receive an exclusive Calgary Stampeders locker-room tour at McMahon Stadium and a team-signed jersey.
Thanks to the generosity of Stampeders fans, a record total of 4,088 coats was collected in the 2013 Coat Drive. That brought the all-time donation totals to nearly 14,000 coats and $27,000 in cash.
