Stamps Announce Winners of Stan Schwartz - Heart of a Champion Awards

The Calgary Stampeders are proud to announce the three winners of the Stan Schwartz - Heart of a Champion Awards for 2019.

These awards, introduced in 2009, recognize local high school football players who made contributions to their team, school and community in addition to displaying athletic and personal perseverance. All student-athletes must be in their senior year and be nominated by their respective coaches.

The following players have been selected for their outstanding achievements:

Mery Laura Moreno Morales - Western Canada High School

Cameron Springsteel - Bishop Grandin High School

Joshua Yee - Forest Lawn High School

Former Stampeders executive vice-president Stan Schwartz - the namesake of the award and a member of the team's Wall of Fame and the Canadian Football Hall Fame - recently presented each student-athlete with a personalized plaque and a commemorative trophy for their school to display. Each recipient will also be granted a $500.00 scholarship upon enrollment in a post-secondary institution.

Mery Laura Moreno Morales - Western Canada High School

Played offensive line for the Redhawks in her recently-completed first season

Enrolls in her school's leadership class, belongs to numerous clubs and serves as class historian

Volunteers at her community centre with bottle drives, clothing collections and garbage pick-ups

Began a still-existing fundraising initiative at her junior high school for families during the holidays

Is the first female recipient of a Stan Schwartz - Heart of a Champion Award

Cameron Springsteel - Bishop Grandin High School

Played all three years of football for the Ghosts and participates in rugby and track and field

Selflessly filled in at numerous positions on offence as a result of injuries to his teammates

Assists special-education students and helps with various athletic tournaments at Bishop Grandin

Competes fiercely on the field is highly respected in the classroom by staff and students alike

Regularly receives honour-roll recognition and plans to pursue a career in law enforcement Joshua Yee - Forest Lawn High School

Primarily plays guard while also contributing as a defensive lineman and linebacker for the Titans

Received the team's Vern E. Langlious Award last season for his outstanding leadership qualities

Received the school-wide Black and Blue Award in Grade 10 for overcoming adversity

Dedicates time to Eastside City Church, The Mustard Seed and organizing many school events

Plans to attend either SAIT or Alberta Bible College
