Calgary Stampeders News Release
Led by Calgary Stampeders fullback Rob Cote, the eighth annual Hike For Hospice takes place this Sunday, May 5 at Fish Creek Provincial Park - Glennfield Area A.
Registration will begin at 9 a.m. with opening ceremonies following at 10 a.m. The hike will start at 10:30 a.m. Joining Rob Cote this year will be Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi, teammates LaMarcus Coker and Matt Walter, as well as members of the Stampeder Outriders and team mascot Ralph the Dog.
"This is my sixth year with the Hike For Hospice," says Cote. "It's an important event that I look forward to every year, raising money and awareness for Hospice Calgary to provide important services to those in need. It's something I'm very proud to be a part of."
Cote continues to be the club's representative with Hospice Calgary, working actively with the organization year-round. The Stampeders have been involved with Hospice Calgary since 2007.
The five-kilometre hike will raise funds to support individuals and families whose lives are affected by a life-threatening illness or the death of someone close to them. Last year's event raised over $120,000.
In 2012, Calgary Hospice's 310 volunteers offered services to over 1,970 children, teens and adults through its Counseling and Education Centre, the Rosedale Hospice and in-home support.
"This event makes a tremendous difference to those we serve," says Sarah Walker, executive director for Hospice Calgary. "The money raised means we can continue helping those coping with a life-threatening illness, sudden or expected death regardless of their financial circumstances."
