Stampede Rally to Earn Point in Waterloo

Waterloo, IA - The Sioux Falls Stampede rallied once again from a 3-1 deficit in the third period to tie and force overtime, but fell 4-3 to the Waterloo Black Hawks Saturday night. The Herd earned a point in the standings and are tied with Waterloo for second place in the West with one game in hand. Anthony Romano and Jami Krannila tallied third period goals while Alec Calvaruso stopped 36 shots for the Stampede who are 32-13-5 on the season.

After blowing a lead and losing in overtime the night before, the Black Hawks showed they were ready to play Saturday night in the first period. The Hawks grabbed the first goal of the game 4:51 when Emil Ohrvall tallied the first of two goals in the period. Vladislav Firstov picked off a Stampede pass and broke in on a 2-on-1 with Ohrvall with Ohrvall one-timing the puck past Stampede goaltender Alec Calvaruso. It remained that way until 12:13 when Ohrvall struck again, this time on the power play. Ohrvall weaved his way through the Stampede defense and wristed a shot into the back of the net to make it a 2-0 game.

Things got a bit chippy as the period went on resulting in Jared Westcott dropping the gloves against Matt Cameron, bringing the Stampede bench to their feet. Waterloo took the two-goal lead into the locker room, outshooting the Herd 10-7 in the period.

The intensity carried over into the second as several scuffles ensued throughout the period. The Herd were awarded a power play just over two minutes and scored just seconds in when Austen Swankler sent a pass to the left of the Waterloo goal to Artem Ivanyuzhenkov who slid the puck across the crease to Ethan Phillips who quickly knocked it home to get the Herd on the board at 2:47.

Things continued to get physical as the period went on, but the score remained the same until 14:19 when Waterloo scored on the power play again. James Marooney took the puck from the right point and sent a pass into the slot for Kyle Haskins who was left all alone and backhanded a shot into the net for a 3-1 advantage for the Hawks. Five combined penalties were called in the final five minutes of the period and Waterloo held their 3-1 lead into the third, outshooting the Herd 15-8 in the period.

The Stampede had a great opportunity early in the third when Waterloo's Jacob Bengtsson was assessed a four-minute minor for high sticking. The Herd had some chances, but couldn't convert and seconds after the power play expired the Herd got called for a penalty of their own. Anthony Romano got the Herd back in the game when he picked off a pass and broke in down the right-wing boards before firing a shot from inside the circle and over the glove of Black Hawks netminder Logan Stein to make it 3-2. Just over two minutes later the Herd went on a power play and cashed in when Brian Chambers found Jami Krannila in the slot and Krannila worked the puck off his backhand and onto his forehand where he wristed the puck past the right pad of Stein to tie the game 3-3.

It appeared the Stampede had taken the lead just moments later when Jared Westcott jammed the puck in front of the net and the red light came on. The referee reviewed it though and determined the puck never crossed the line and the game remained 3-3 and eventually head into overtime.

Sioux Falls dominated the first minute of overtime with several good chances to score. Romano intercepted another pass and raced in on a breakaway, but Stein made a pad save. Moments later Austen Swankler cut into the slot and wristed a shot that just missed the net. Just seconds later, Krannila and Swankler broke in on a 2-on-0 and just missed the net again before Waterloo's Ohrvall took the puck and tallied the hat trick with a shot from inside the right circle 1:40 in.

Waterloo outshot the Stampede 40-27 on the night and finished 2-for-7 on the power play while the Stampede were 2-for-6.

The Stampede return to action on Friday when they travel down to Omaha to face the Lancers at Ralston Arena. Puck drop is 7:35 PM and fans can catch the game on KELO News Talk 1320-AM, 105.1-FM, 107.9-FM and KELO.com starting at 7:05 PM.
