Idaho Stampede News Release
BOISE, Idaho, November 8, 2010 - The Idaho Stampede announced today Roberto Bergersen has retired from professional basketball.
Bergersen, 35, played six of his 10 seasons in the pro ranks with the Idaho Stampede, playing from 1999-01, 2003-04 and 2007-10. The former second round (52nd overall) draft pick of the Atlanta Hawks in 1999 finished with 2,286 points as a Stampeder, making a franchise record 367 three-pointers at a clip of 40.1 percent in 226 games (143 starts). Bergersen was a CBA All-Star selection in 2003-04 as a Stampeder, winning MVP honors in that game.
"My fondness of Boise and the Stampede organization has grown through the years of my development as a man," Bergersen said. "When the opportunity came up to come back here and play in Boise - with the community always embracing me as it has - it just always made it a no-brainer. I have always been appreciative towards the organization and have called them my second family."
Managing Investor Bill Ilett said future plans of the organization will involve Bergersen.
"I don't feel that this is the end of the Stampede's relationship with Roberto. I like to think that it represents a new beginning," Ilett said. "We would like him to be involved with the Stampede organization in various capacities for years to come."
Bergersen is currently the full-time director of Hoop Dreams Basketball Club. The club affords children of the Treasure Valley the chance to have a "meaningful experience through basketball that can affect their lives as it did mine," Bergersen said.
Bergersen, originally from Seattle, Wash., transferred to Boise State University for the 1998-99 season after one season at the University of Washington (1994-95 season) and one game at the College of Southern Idaho (1995-96 season). In his three seasons as a Bronco, Bergersen averaged 17.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in 86 games. Bergersen made 163 three-pointers, shooting 40.0 percent from behind the arc while at BSU.
"My decision has mainly been based on the fact that I want to put focus on a new chapter in my life," Bergersen said. "I want to take my knowledge and those experiences I've had and transfer them over to the youth of the community."
