Stampede Earn a Point in Shootout Loss at Omaha

The Stampede rallied from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits, but came up short in a shootout, falling 3-2 to the Omaha Lancers Friday night at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. Austyn Young and Kyle Rankin scored goals for the Stampede while Stephon Williams made 25 saves in goal. Omaha outscored the Stampede 2-0 in the shootout to earn the win. The Stampede are now 3-3-1 on the season while Omaha is 4-2-1 and atop the Western Conference.

The Lancers struck first, 9:26 into the period when Matthew Gaudreau found the back of the net. Gaudreau took a pass inside the right circle from Michael Ferrantino and wristed a shot that slipped through the pads of Stampede netminder Stephon Williams to give the Lancers and 1-0 edge. The Stampede controlled the rest of the period, outshooting Omaha 10-4, but couldn't anything past Lancer goaltender Alex Lyon.

The Stampede wasted little time the second to tie the game as Austyn Young tallied his third goal of the season just 16 seconds in when he took a pass in the slot from Kyle Rankin and fired it through the pads of Lyon. Mitch Hughes also added an assist on the goal. It would stay 1-1 until 9:05 when the Lancers struck again on a goal from Max Vallis. Vallis wristed a shot from the left circle that was gloved by Williams but bounced out and right back to Vallis who then just backhanded a shot into the net past Williams to give the Lancers at 2-1 lead. The Stampede nearly tied the game in the final seconds of the period when a shot from Evan Moore rattled off the goalpost and the rebound bounced over two Stampede sticks in the crease. The Lancers outshot the Herd 10-7 in the period and took their one-goal advantage into the locker room.

In the third the Stampede battled to get back into the game, but were shutdown for nearly 15 minutes in the period. The Stampede got a chance to tie it at 14:25 of the third when Kenney Morrison was called for checking from behind to put the Stampede on a 5-on-3 advantage. The Herd capitalized on that opportunity just seconds later when Kyle Rankin tallied his second of the season. Rankin clanked one off the goal pipe and had it roll in the crease and was tipped by Young before being batted in the net by Rankin to tie the game at two.

That goal eventually forced overtime where Omaha took control and never allowed the Herd even a shot on goal. The Lancers nearly won the game with just over a minute remaining when Ken Babinski's shot at an empty net sailed high and off the glass. The game then went to a shootout where Omaha outscored the Stampede 2-0. After Austyn Young had the puck swatted away in his first attempt, Omaha's Jonathan Liau bobbled the puck on his way down the ice, but was able to regain control and lifted it into the upper right hand corner of the net. Kyle Rankin then shot for the Herd, but it went just wide of the net and that allowed Omaha a chance to win. Casey Bailey was able to tuck the puck under the left pad of Williams to give the Lancers the victory.

The Stampede outshot the Lancers 35-28 and went 1 for 4 on the powerplay while killing off all three of Omaha's powerplays. The Stampede have the rest of the weekend off and return to action next Friday when they host Sioux City at 7:05 PM at the Sioux Falls Arena.
