Stampede Announce Jakob L. Beier Scholarship Winners
April 13, 2007 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Sioux Falls, SD-The Sioux Falls Stampede have announced the recipients of the 2007 Jakob L. Beier Scholarship Award for Courage. The award annually provides one $500 scholarship each for a female and male "senior" playing high school hockey in the state of South Dakota who will continue to pursue studies at an accredited college/university.
The "Class of 2007" winners are:
Brittany Salisbury: A goaltender for the 4-time State Champion Sioux Falls Lady Flyers hockey team. Brittany was named to the South Dakota First Team All-State squad all four years in high school and is the first female winner of the "Golden Goal Award" in the history of Sioux Falls Youth Hockey. She will close out her senior year as the winner of the 2007 All-State Academic Award (posting an ACT Score of 32). She is a member of the Roosevelt High School Marching Band, Symphonic Band and the Symphony Orchestra. She plans to continue her hockey career and education at either Concordia College or Gustavus Adolphus University.
Jonathan Kading: A forward for Stevens High School in Rapid City and a member of the academic honor roll all four years. Very active in his community, Jonathan is involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters, organized an Eagle Scout project, was a volunteer laborer at Storybrook Island, helped with Vacation Bible School and participated for ten years in the Rapid City "Clean-Up" program. During his senior season, he compiled three goals and five assists in 21 games. Says his coach Brady Pinney: "Jonathan quietly went from a player that needed to do a lot of work to become one of the better players and a vocal leader on and off the ice".
The Jakob L. Beier scholarship award is based on each student-athlete's contribution to his or her local community during their high school career, academic record, participation in school and community activities plus impact on the game of hockey.
Jacob Beier was a 5-year-old boy who lost his life on December 27, 2003 after an 11-month battle with brain cancer. Jakob had an incredible thirst for hockey and a dream to one day play for the Sioux Falls Stampede. The Stampede scholarship program was created to honor Jakob's memory in the 2003-04 season.
Jakob's parents - Lori and Lance Beier, will be in attendance during the Stampede's final regular season home game on Saturday, April 14 versus Tri-City, to help present the "Class of 2007" with the Jakob L. Beier Stampede Scholarship Awards for Courage. Brittany Sailsbury will be unable to attend due to a hockey tournament and will be honored during the Stampede's first playoff game.
