Tampa Bay Storm News Release
TAMPA, FL -- Tampa Bay Storm quarterback Shane Stafford picked up his second honor in as many days, earning the Arena Football League's Offensive Player of the Week award on Tuesday.
Stafford was also named the Player of the Week by the Arena Football League Writers Association on Monday.
The fourth-year Storm quarterback tied a team record and career high with eight touchdown passes and set a personal best with 28 completions in the game. Stafford finished the contest with 273 yards on 28-of-35 passing. He had no interceptions to go along with his eight touchdowns. Stafford led the Storm offense to 10 consecutive scoring drives in the game. The Tampa Bay offense scored on every drive that Stafford engineered in the contest.
Stafford's career-high 28 completions went to seven different receivers, as the Storm quarterback got everyone involved in the offense against the SaberCats. Stafford's favorite target was offensive specialist Freddie Solomon, who finished with 10 catches in the game. WR/LB Lawrence Samuels followed with nine catches. Four other receivers â Clif Dell, Ronney Daniels, Anthony Derricks, and Lynaris Elpheage -- caught passes, as did FB Umar Muhammad.
Stafford also spread his eight touchdown passes out. Solomon led Storm receivers with three TD catches. Samuels and Dell both had two touchdowns, and rookie Ronney Daniels hauled in his first career AFL touchdown.
The AFLPA honor and the AFL award marked the second time in his career that each organization bestowed their respective awards on Stafford. He was also named the AFLWA Player of the Week and the AFL Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Storm to a victory over the Los Angeles Avengers in Week 14 of last season.
Orlando Predators defensive specialist Damon Mason was named the ADT Defensive Player of the Game. He recorded 11.0 tackles and an interception in Orlando's win over Colorado. Philadelphia Soul wide receiver/linebacker Sean Scott was named the U.S. Army Ironman of the Week. He had six catches for 99 yards and two touchdowns on offense and added 6.5 tackles and a forced fumble on defense.
Stafford and the Storm return to action on Sunday, February 6, when they host the Austin Wranglers at the St. Pete Times Forum. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
Tickets for the Storm's game against Austin are on sale now at the St. Pete Times Forum Box Office and all TicketMaster locations. Tickets are also available by calling (813) 301-6600 and online at www.tampabaystorm.com.
