St. Lucie Mets News Release

The St. Lucie Mets split a double header with the Bradenton Marauders Sunday afternoon at Digital Domain Park. The split puts the Mets at 28-26 on the second half of the season and 66-58 overall.

The Mets dropped game one by a score of 3-1. Zack Wheeler got the start for the Mets. Wheeler ran into trouble early as the Marauders got to him for a quick run in the first inning putting the Mets in an early 1-0 hole. Wheeler would settle down to keep the Marauders off the scoreboard the next four innings. The Mets offense got Wheeler off the hook tying the game in the bottom of the fifth. Gilbert Gomez tripled in Francisco Pena with the Mets first and only run of the game. Cory Mazzoni tossed two scoreless innings for the Mets in relief of Wheeler forcing extra innings. Back-to-back throwing errors to lead off the top of the eighth inning proved to be the Mets undoing as both runners would come around to score in the frame. St. Lucie couldn't rally in the bottom of the inning to close out the 3-1 loss.

Zack Wheeler was solid through five receiving the no-decision. He allowed one run on four hits while striking out nine batters. Gilbert Gomez drove in the lone Mets run and Wilmer Flores added two hits in the loss.

The Mets again fell behind early in the back end of the double header. Mets starter Armando Rodriguez allowed a solo home run in the first inning to put the Mets in an early 1-0 hole. Wilmer Flores tied the game in the fourth inning scoring from second on a throwing error by the Bradenton third baseman. The Marauders answered right back scoring again in the top of the fifth to make it a 2-1 game. Trailing 3-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Mets rallied. Cory Vaughn and Dock Doyle led the inning off with back-to-back doubles cutting it to a 3-2 lead. Rylan Sandoval singled in Doyle with the games tying run and with the bases loaded and one out, Stefan Welch flied out deep to centerfield driving in Jose Coronado from third with the game-winning run.

Armando Rodriguez allowed two runs on four hits receiving the no-decision. Jeff Kaplan tossed a scoreless inning of relief and Josh Edgin got the win despite allowing one run in his inning of work. Juan Centeno had three hits on the day for the Mets and Rylan Sandoval had two hits in the win.

The Mets have an off day on Monday and will head to Ft. Myers to take on the Miracle in a double header on Tuesday. Kyle Allen and John Church are scheduled to start for the Mets. Allen is 5-9 with a 5.76 ERA in 23 appearances, 17 starts. He has struck out 70 while walking 53 with opposing batters hitting .297 against him in 95.1 innings of work. Church will enter Tuesday with a record of 5-2 and a 4.48 ERA. Church has tallied 40 strikeouts to 26 walks and is holding opposing batters to a .270 average covering 64.1 innings. It will be Church's fourth start in his 34th appearance of the season.
