Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(St. Lucie, FL) - Major leaguer John Maine made an injury rehab start against the Vero Beach Dodgers and helped the St. Lucie Mets to a 10-3 victory at Tradition Field Saturday night. Rain delayed the start of the game by 20 minutes before the Mets pounded out 14 hits in the win. Travis Denker homered for the third time in six games for Vero Beach. The series continues Sunday at 5:00 PM. The biggest loss for the Dodgers might not have been the game. Starter Matt Merricks, making just his second start since returning from the DL, left with one out in the fourth inning after one pitch to Jamar Hill. He had been bothered by shoulder tendonitis which landed him on the Disabled List earlier in the year. His status is uncertain. The Mets put up three runs against Merricks in the third. Hill drew a leadoff walk and Jonathan Malo doubled. After a strikeout, Jose Cruz hit a sacrifice fly to center to score the game's first run. A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases and Josh Peterson rolled a base hit to center to plate to more for a 3-0 lead. Jesus Flores doubled in a run in the sixth inning. Two more scored in the seventh on two hits, two walks and an error. St. Lucie poured it on in the eighth with four more runs on four hits, two walks and a wild pitch. Maine, who came to the Mets from Baltimore in the Kris Benson trade, dealt five scoreless innings for the win. He allowed three singles and two walks while striking out seven. Edgar Alfonzo added three shutout innings in relief.
