April 26, 2024 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
St. Louis City SC News Release
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis CITY SC Brazilian midfielder Célio Pompeu signed a new MLS contract through 2026 with a club option for 2027. Pompeu has risen through the St. Louis organization as he began with St Louis CITY2 in 2022.
"We are proud to see Célio's growth through our pipeline", said Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel. "He has grown as a professional, both on and off the field, and to reap the rewards with a new contract was something he worked really hard for. Celio continues to elevate his game each and every day and we hope that he doesn't stop raising the bar."
Pompeu, 24, is having a strong second season in MLS through nine matches in 2024, tallying three goals and three assists. The Brazilian midfielder recorded four-straight games with at least a point (2G/3A). His three goals and three assists in league play are already career highs. Pompeu began his MLS career in 2023 and strung together two goals and three assists in all competitions, one goal in league play, one goal in playoffs, and three assists in the Open Cup.
"I am excited to continue my career in St. Louis", said Pompeu. "I'm thankful to [John] Hack[worth] and Lutz [Pfannenstiel] for believing in me from the start at CITY2 and to Bradley [Carnell] for allowing me to prove myself at the MLS level. I can't wait to continue to grow here and show the St. Louis fans why I am here."
Pompeu kicked off the inaugural season for the St. Louis organization in 2022 at the MLS NEXT Pro level with a bang. He helped lead CITY2 to Western Conference regular-season title with 10 goal contributions, five goals and five assists. The Brazilian midfielder then recorded two goals and an assist in the MLSNP playoffs as CITY2 finished up as the league's runner-up. Pompeu finished the 2022 campaign with seven goals and seven assists across all competitions.
