St. Joe finishes homestand in style

St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release

St. Joseph, MO-A pitcher's duel was ended with the night's only mistake. St. Joe's (3-0, 29-22) Wil Quintana decided the game with a solo home run with two-out in the bottom of the ninth for the 1-0 win over Lincoln (0-3, 31-20). St. Joe finished the 10-game homestand 8-2 and completed the first series sweep of the Saltdogs by any team this season.

Starters Jesen Merle for St. Joe and Brian Rodaway for Lincoln were outstanding, scattering hits as neither offense was able to capitalize on their limited chances. Both teams had a chance with runners at second and third early in the game but were unable to come through when the first play of the game occurred in the top of the fourth.

With runners on the corners and one out for Lincoln, Kevin Sullivan hit a flyball to right field. Cory Harris tagged up from third and Wil Quintana's strong throw was slightly offline and it appeared Harris may have slid under the tag of Misha Dworken only to be called out at the plate preserving the scoreless tie.

Merle would be lifted after his longest outing of the year, six scoreless innings scattering seven hits, but Rodaway continued for Lincoln and got stronger as the night got later.

The game remained tied heading into the bottom of the ninth when Rodaway-who had retired 11 batters in a row-made a mistake to Quintana. Quintana drove his 11th home run of the year over the wall in left field for the game's only run, and the 1-0 win. It was St. Joe's seventh win in their last at-bat this season.

Huguet (3-1) picked up his second win in as many nights and Rodaway (4-2) was saddled with the loss despite a complete game four-hitter.

The 'Snakes now hit the road for seven games in eight days, with four in Sioux City beginning Thursday night. Donovan Graves (5-2) starts for St. Joe as they try to stay hot in the second half in Iowa.
