Sacramento Republic FC News Release
After a long offseason, the boys in Old Glory Red returned to the pitch for the first day of Training Camp, presented by Western Health Advantage, on Tuesday to prepare for 2021 USL Championship season ahead.
In his second year as head coach, Mark Briggs continued the tradition bringing in the entire team that works hard for a strong season - the players, coaches, technical staff, and the front office team.
Day one was an absolutely beautiful mid-March afternoon in Sacramento - specifically Consumnes River College where training camp will take place and the squad will train during the regular season. The squad was looking sharp, especially Rafa Diaz who picked up right where he left off last season as one of the league's most reliable shot-stoppers.
A number of new faces made their debuts for the first-time in SRFC gear including goalkeeper Tomas Gomez, defenders Dan Casey, Duke Lacroix, midfielders Pete Pennanen, Tucker Bone, Maalique Foster and Luis Felipe. But one face in particular was a familiar one, as the squad was excited to welcome back defender Mitchell Taintor after spending the 2020 season with San Antonio FC.
Among the new faces are two trialists who impressed following the club's Open Tryouts. Goalkeeper Tanner Kennard and Midfielder Santiago Silva Rueda were standouts in the 100+ players looking to make an impression on the technical staff. They've earned a chance to train and compete for a pro contract with Republic FC.
Since its founding, the Indomitable Club has invited a competitor from Open Tryouts to join the club for training camp and to chase their dream of becoming a pro footballer. Next week, we'll look at the five academy standouts that are joining the team for camp and are helping prepare the club for the year ahead.
Wednesday's training was all about fitness, with agility tests and the annual beep test.
The beep test is designed to measure a players' ability to perform timed cardio over a set period of time. The distance that each player achieves helps determine a better baseline for their fitness... not to mention, prove to the gaffer that each player is fit for the long Championship campaign ahead.
Check out Connor Sutton's interview with Pete Pennanen after the first day of training. On this week's edition of The Breakaway, Pete talks about the season ahead and the first days of his time in Sacramento.
Stay tuned for more from Training Camp as the Indomitable Club inches closer to the regular season.
