Squirrels Use Big Third to Top Baysox

Richmond, VA - The Bowie Baysox (15-19) gave up five runs in the third inning to the Richmond Flying Squirrels (16-19) and lost 6-1 on Friday night.

The loss ended the Baysox season high three-game winning streak.

The Flying Squirrels struck first in the bottom of the first. Gary Brown drew a lead off walk, stole second and went to third on a single by Ryan Cavan. Tommy Joseph then hit into a double play, but on the play Brown scored to give the Squirrels a 1-0 lead.

In the third, the Baysox tied up the game. Carlos Rojas led off with an infield single, went to second on a throwing error and to third on a groundout. Jonathan Schoop then knocked him in with a sacrifice fly that made the score 1-1.

Richmond came right back in the bottom of the inning and scored five runs. Brown, Cavan and Tommy Joseph started the inning with three straight singles to load up the bases. Daniel Mayora knocked in the first run of the inning with a single that scored Brown. Chris Dominguez then broke the game open with a grand slam to make the score 6-1.

Chris Heston picked up the win. He threw seven innings and gave up just one unearned run on five hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Cole McCurry retired the last 10 batters he faced after giving up the grand slam in the third, but still got his sixth loss of the season. He gave up six runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Tomorrow in game three of the four-game series RHP Zach Clark (2-2, 4.54) will take on LHP Mike Kickham (1-3, 3.51) at 6:35 p.m.

The Baysox return home on May 15 for a four-game series against the Altoona Curve. The series will include a Military Appreciation Night on Wednesday, May 16.
