Squirrels Silenced in 9-0 Shutout to Baysox

RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond Flying Squirrels were shut out by the Bowie Baysox, 9-0, on Thursday night at The Diamond.

The Flying Squirrels (9-9) had their four-game win streak snapped and were held to two hits by the Baysox (10-8).

In the first inning, Frederick Bencosme hit a two-run double and later scored on a single by TT Bowens to give the Baysox a 3-0 lead.

John Rhodes added an RBI single in the third and Silas Ardoin worked a bases-loaded walk in the third to open a 5-0 lead against Richmond starter Matt Frisbee (Loss, 0-2).

The score held at 5-0 until a four-run ninth inning by the Baysox offense.

The Bowie pitching staff combined for 17 strikeouts, including seven by starter Ryan Long and four by reliever Nick Richmond (Win, 3-0).

Richmond reliever Evan Gates struck out four batters over 2.2 scoreless relief innings and allowed one hit. Jose Cruz worked around two walks to post two scoreless innings.

The Flying Squirrels and Baysox continue the series on Friday night at The Diamond. Right-hander Hayden Birdsong (0-1, 2.38) will start for Richmond and right-hander Trace Bright (0-1, 2.63) will be on the mound for Bowie. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

Friday is 90s Night at The Diamond featuring a Flying Squirrels Denim Bucket Hat giveaway for the first 1,000 fans ages 15 and older presented by Pepsi. The ballpark gates open at 5:30 p.m. It is also Funnville Friday Happy Hour with $2 12-ounce domestic beers from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and $2 Pepsi fountain sodas at the Papa Johns stand.
