North Adams SteepleCats News Release
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Sophomore southpaw Scott Squier (Hawaii) dazzled over five innings of seven-strikeout ball, and classmate Dominic Severino (CCSU) drove in a team-best three runs, as North Adams defeated Vermont, 8-0, in a rain-shortened Opening Night victory in NECBL Western Division action on Thursday night at Joe Wolfe Field.
Bolstered by a seven-hit performance over five innings, the SteepleCats (1-0) gave Squier more than enough offense to work with, as the lefty kept the Mountaineer (0-1) offense at bay with five stellar innings, striking out seven and walking one while yielding three hits over that span.
Severino, meanwhile, drove in the first run of the game before a two-RBI double in the third gave North Adams a four-run cushion. Following another run in the fourth, the home side broke the game open with three more in the fifth before the skies opened.
With five innings in the book, the game was ruled official and will not be resumed, giving North Adams the rain-shortened win.
Vermont's John Nasshan took the loss after surrendering four runs over three innings while fanning two. North Adams also got to reliever Zack Grossfield for a run in the fourth before 2012 SteepleCat alum Nick Narodowy was pegged for three more runs when he entered in the bottom of the fifth.
With the bases loaded in the first, Severino reached on a fielder's choice to short to score the first run in the first, and an error allowed one more to cross in the same sequence, putting the home side ahead, 2-0, after an inning.
Following a scoreless second, North Adams got right back to work, as sophomore Daniel Bick (Georgia College) led off the frame with a single before a fielder's choice and a walk loaded the bases. That prompted Severino's double into the gap in right center, scoring Bick and center fielder Vinny Zarrillo (Rutgers), making it 4-0 after three.
Zarrillo pushed in one more run in the fourth after junior Joe Landi (Rhode Island) walked to start and scored two batters later. Then in the fifth, sophomore Julian Loret de Mola (Nova Southeastern) led off the frame with a triple before eventually scoring on a stolen base attempt. Freshman Kyle Richardson (Notre Dame) later scored on a wild pitch before junior Bryan Soloman (Eastern Kentucky) wrapped up the offensive display with an RBI base knock to account for the final run of the contest.
The SteepleCats continue Western Division play Friday (June 7) with a road tilt at reigning division champion Keene. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
