Keene Swamp Bats News Release
The Keene Swamp Bats began their 15th NECBL season at South Kingston, Rhode Island against the Ocean State Waves, falling to the Waves 14-1.
The Waves, playing their inaugural game in the NECBL, lit up the Swamp Bats' starter Nick Neumann (0-1) early on in the second inning. Neumann only made it 1.1 innings as he surrendered six hits in the second frame, allowing eight runs. The Swamp Bats also committed four errors in the inning.
The Waves would tally on six more in the fourth inning on three consecutive bases loaded walks by John Birkbeck, who only lasted 1.2 innings. Matthew Clancey came on in the fourth and got the Bats out of trouble but the damage was already done.
There was no score the rest of the way as the Swamp Bats were stifled by the entire Ocean State pitching staff. Matt Cook (1-0) surrendered only two hits in four innings of one run ball, Tyler Bowditch pitched four perfect innings of relief and John Tangherlini finished things off in the ninth.
Keene was only able to scratch across two hits, a double by Zach Lauricella in the first inning, who later came around to score the lone Swamp Bat run, and the other hit from Eric Gutierrez, who tallied a single in the final frame.
Due to the inclement weather, the Swamp Bats' first game at Alumni Field on Friday against North Adams is postponed. The home opener will now be on Saturday, June 8th against the Mystic Schooners. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
