Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springdale, AR - The Cardinals jumped out to a 1-0 series lead with their 12 inning, 4-2 win over NW Arkansas on Thursday night and looked to take a commanding two game lead with staff ace David Kopp on the mound in Game Two Friday night at Arvest Ballpark.
The Naturals would be the first team to strike on Friday as Derrick Robinson led off the bottom of the first with a bunt single and moved all the way to third on a throwing error by David Kopp. Johnny Giavotella followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to give NW Arkansas a 1-0 lead.
In the 2nd, the Naturals added another run as the #8 hitter, Anthony Seratelli, lined a home run over the right field wall to increase the lead to 2-0.
David Kopp settled into a nice groove from there throwing three straight scoreless innings heading into the 6th inning. Eric Hosmer led off the 6th a solo home run to make it a 3-0 lead for the Naturals and Clint Robinson followed with a walk. After a sacrifice bunt moved Robinson to second, Paulo Orlando singled to right field to put runners on the corners. Kopp would exit the game after the single and Matt Frevert came in to make his Springfield debut and retired the next two batters to keep the score at 3-0.
NW Arkansas added two more runs to their tally in the 7th against Frevert with two outs as Johnny Giavotella singled to right field and Eric Hosmer followed with an RBI triple and was allowed to score as the relay throw the third base from Pete Kozma rolled into the dugout to give the Naturals a 5-0 advantage.
Naturals' starter Everett Teaford dominated the Cardinals bats from the first pitch of the game as he lasted seven strong innings allowing just three singles while striking out six.
Henry Barrera came in out of the Naturals' bullpen in the 8th and walked a batter and allowed a single to Daryl Jones before getting Pete Kozma to ground out to end the inning.
In the 9th, the Cardinals mounted a rally as Aaron Luna, Andrew Brown and Matt Carpenter all singled to make the score 5-1. Chris Swauger then pinch hit and bounced into a double play score Brown from third to bring the score to 5-2 with two out and no one on base. Jose Garcia then drew a walk and Antone DeJesus fol0lwed with a single to bring the tying run to the plate in Nick Derba, but Barrera got Derba to fly out to right field to end the game with a 5-2 loss to even the series at 1-1.
