Springfield Falcons Release Defenseman Steve McCarthy from PTO

Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield Falcons have released defenseman Steve McCarthy from his professional tryout contract, Falcons Director of Hockey Operations Bruce Landon announced today.

McCarthy, 33, skated in three games with the Falcons and tallied six penalty with a +1 rating since signing a PTO on Nov. 11. The 6-foot-1, 209-pound defenseman spent the 2013-14 season with Zurich of the Swiss-A league, registering two penalty minutes in three appearances. He has appeared in a career total 302 NHL games with Chicago, Vancouver and Atlanta, earning 55 points (17g, 38a).

The Trail, British Columbia native has also skated in 161 AHL contests with Springfield, Norfolk, Chicago and Abbotsford, accumulating 56 points (12g, 44a). Additionally, McCarthy spent three seasons in the WHL with Edmonton and Kootenay, playing in 117 games and totaling 92 points (30g, 62a).

McCarthy was drafted in the first round, 23rd overall, by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.
