Springfield Falcons Ink Defenseman Brett Ponich

Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield Falcons have signed defenseman Brett Ponich to a one-year American Hockey League Contract, Falcons Director of Hockey Operations Bruce Landon announced today. Ponich was invited to the 2014-15 Falcons Training Camp on a professional try-out agreement.

Ponich, 23, split the 2013-14 season between the Chicago Wolves of the AHL and the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL. The 6-foot-7, 225-pound defenseman appeared in 14 games with the Wolves, earning three points (3a), and 51 games with the Wings, accumulating eight points (3g, 5a). Over his career, Ponich has skated in a total of 101 AHL and 69 ECHL games, racking up 111 PIM and 102 PIM, respectively. The Beaumont, Alberta native also spent five seasons with the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL, collecting 47 points (2g, 45a) and 327 PIM in 249 appearances.

Ponich was selected in the second round, 48th overall, by the St. Louis Blues in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

The Springfield Falcons kick-off the 2014-15 season with a visit to the Syracuse Crunch Oct. 11 and Oct. 17 before returning to the MassMutual Center for the home opener against the Hershey Bears on Oct. 18.
