SURPRISE, AZ - Rain impacted the Omaha Royals Spring Training schedule for a third consecutive day on Saturday and a former American League Rookie of the Year was optioned to Omaha by the Kansas City Royals.
The Royals scheduled Cactus League game against the Tacoma Rainiers was cancelled by rain in Surprise, although the Triple-A club was able to play a scrimmage with Wichita, Kansas City's Double-A affiliate.
Meanwhile, Angel Berroa was optioned to Omaha by Kansas City. Berroa won the Rookie of the Year honor in 2003, but has struggled both at the plate and at shortstop since. Kansas City Manager Buddy Bell said Tony Pena, Jr., acquired Friday in a trade with the Atlanta Braves, would be his Opening Day shortstop.
Omaha, with a 2-2-2 Spring Training record, visits the Portland Beavers Sunday at the San Diego Padres Spring Training complex in Peoria, Arizona.
The Royals open their 2007 Pacific Coast League season on Thursday, April 5th at Albuquerque, with the home opener at Rosenblatt Stadium slated for Friday, April 13th at 7:05 p.m., also vs. the Isotopes
