Sporting Kansas City News Release
Sporting Kansas City announced Monday that the club has waived forward Birahim Diop. The 33-year-old Senegal native scored five goals in 32 regular season MLS matches for Sporting Kansas City after arriving at the start of the 2010 season.
Diop's debut season in Kansas City was highlighted by two memorable matches. He recorded two goals and an assist in his first start for the club and then tallied one of six hat tricks in club history in the season finale. He finished the season leading MLS in scoring percentage (five goals in six shots on goal) and goals per 90 minutes (five goals in 497 minutes).
In 2011, Diop made 18 appearances in the MLS regular season with one assist and also entered as a second-half substitute in the second leg of the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Sporting Kansas City (3-0-0) will look to continue their perfect start to the 2012 season at Chivas USA on Sunday, March 31 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The match will be broadcast live on KSMO-TV at 8 p.m. CT.
