Sporting Defeats Manchester City, 2-0, In Barclays New York Challenge

HARRISON, NJ - Two goals from Yannick Djalo lifted Sporting Clube de Portugal over Manchester City FC on Friday night in the second match of the Barclays New York Challenge. Djalo's two first half goals were enough for the Portuguese club, who went into a tie for first place in the Challenge standings. England's Tottenham Hotspur defeated the New York Red Bulls, 2-1, in the opening match of the tournament Thursday.

Sporting dominated possession in the first half, but it was Manchester City who had the first good scoring opportunity on the night. In the fourth minute, Welsh forward Craig Bellamy raced onto a loose ball behind the Sporting defense and fired a shot on goal that keeper Tiago Ferreira parried away.

Bellamy nearly gave City the lead again in the 13th minute. After Stephen Ireland collected the ball in midfield and played Jo down the right flank, Bellamy made a darting run to the front of goal, but his sliding, first-time effort off Jo's pass rolled wide.

Despite not creating many scoring chances in the early stages of the match, Sporting's persistent possession paid off as they opened the scoring in the 23rd minute. Joao Pereira ran through the center of Manchester City's midfield and played Simon Vukcevic on the right side. Vukcevic cut the ball back to his left foot and sent an in-swinging cross into the box, where Djalo rose and guided the ball past Joe Hart.

Sporting struck again before halftime, and again it was Djalo providing the finish. Sporting defender Evaldo Fabiano's long pass found the foot of forward Carlos Saleiro, who skillfully chipped the ball behind the City defense. Djalo latched onto the loose ball and rounded Hart, who had come off his line, and easily finished into the vacant net.

The tournament concludes on Sunday, July 25 in a doubleheader with Sporting facing Tottenham at 1:00 PM and the Red Bulls taking on Manchester City at 3:30 PM.
