Tri-City Dust Devils News Release

A hustle double, a stolen base and a sacrifice fly were the difference in a close ballgame between the Spokane Indians (15-13 2H, 48-43) and the Tri-City Dust Devils (9-19 2H, 38-53) Friday night, with the Indians taking a 4-3 win at Gesa Stadium.

The home side, playing as the Columbia River Rooster Tails in salute to this weekend's hydroplane races, took an early 3-0 lead. Mike Peabody and Kyren Paris struck back-to-back doubles in the 1st inning, with Paris plating Peabody for a 1-0 lead.

The Tails then grounded out two more runs in the 2nd inning. Steven Rivas and Straton Podaras hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Mike Wilson then brought Rivas home with a groundout to the right side, making it 2-0. A Christian Molfetta single scored Podaras for the 3-0 lead, but those were all the runs Columbia River would get off starter Austin Kitchen (5-1), who went five innings for the win.

Spokane started chipping away at the lead in the top of the 3rd inning. The Indians' Trevor Boone hit a home run over the left field fence to make it a 3-1 game. Then, in the 4th, Spokane tied the game via a Julio Carreras solo home run and an RBI double by Colin Simpson.

In the 6th, the Indians took the lead for good. Zac Veen led off the inning with a groundball just getting through the infield past shortstop. Veen, sprinting all the way, turned what seemed a single into a double, putting a runner in scoring position with no one out.

Veen then stole third base and scored on a Warming Bernabel sacrifice fly for the final run of the game and a 4-3 Spokane lead. Reliever Emilker Guzman (2-5), who gave up only the one hit in three innings of work, got the loss.

The Rooster Tails would threaten in both the 8th and 9th innings. Molfetta and Peabody both drew walks in the 8th and a wild pitch moved them into scoring position with one out. The Indians would strand the runners, though, and keep the lead.

In the 9th Columbia River put together a two-out rally, with Podaras and Wilson singling to put runners on the corners and put the pressure on Spokane reliever Anderson Bido. Molfetta again came to the plate, but Bido struck him out to end the game and get his second save of 2022.

With the win the Indians clinched the series, having taken the first four games. The Dust Devils/Rooster Tails have now lost five straight games.

Saturday night's game begins at 7:05 p.m. at Gesa Stadium, game five of a six-game series. Landon Marceaux gets the start for the Rooster Tails, and Mike Ruff goes to the hill for Spokane.

The game broadcast begins with the King Beverage Budweiser Pregame Show at 6:50 p.m. at dustdevilsbaseball.com and the MiLB First Pitch app.
