Spokane Clipped by Edmonton in High-Scoring Affair

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs finished on the wrong end of a wild back-and-forth shootout on Saturday night at Spokane Arena, falling to the Edmonton Oil Kings, 6-5. Forward Jaret Anderson-Dolan, a day removed from a four-point performance including a hat trick, scored twice to lead Spokane in defeat.

Edmonton found the net first as 17-year-old forward Kobe Mohr scored his fourth of the season on a breakaway at the 4:06 mark of the first period.

The Chiefs responded with goals from Taylor Ross and Anderson-Dolan, the second of which was of the highlight reel variety as Anderson-Dolan split the Edmonton defense down the middle and beat Oil Kings' starting goaltender Patrick Dea to the left side.

The visitors responded to tie the game at 2-2 with an unassisted goal from Artyom Baltruk, who took advantage of a Spokane turnover in their defensive zone to beat goalie Dawson Weatherill on a rebound opportunity created by his own shot. The goal, scored at the 2:20 mark of the second period, was Baltruk's first in the Western Hockey League.

Spokane bounced back to take a two-goal lead with goals from Keanu Yamamoto and Hudson Elynuik. Elynuik's goal came shorthanded just after the midway point of the second as he took a partial breakaway and spun around the Oil Kings defender, eventually punching in a rebound for his tenth of the season.

Edmonton deflated the Chiefs' sails late in the second with two quick goals, first by Aaron Irving (his eighth) at 17:10, then by Tyson Gruninger (his first), to tie the game at 4-4.

The Oil Kings continued to push on the gas pedal as overage forward Tyler Robertson fired a slapshot past Weatherill at the 5:26 mark of the third before fellow 20-year-old Lane Bauer scored his team-leading 14th of the season on a fortunate bounce of Spokane defenseman Evan Fiala in front of the net.

Anderson-Dolan chipped in a perfect cross-crease pass from Elynuik on a power play at the 10:29 mark of the third but that's as close as they could get, falling 6-5.

The loss was Spokane's first at home to the Oil Kings in the Edmonton franchise's existence, dating back to the 2007-2008 season.

The Chiefs finished 1-for-4 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill. Shots on goal were tied, 32-32.
