Traverse City Pit Spitters News Release
Traverse City, MI - The Traverse City Pit Spitters won 16-4 in a suspended game from July 15 and won the regularly scheduled game for today 4-3 over the Kalamazoo Growlers.
The Pit Spitters hold a four-game lead over the Rockford Rivets in the second-half standings. With seven games to play, the Pit Spitters magic number to clinch a postseason berth is three. If they hold on for the second half title, they will rematch with the Kalamazoo Growlers in the first round of the playoffs.
The first game resumed in the top of the fifth with the Pit Spitters up 11-3. Sam Tackett tripled home two runs in the fifth. A couple innings later, Michael Tchavdarov homered to right for his first of the season. The Pit Spitters would win that game 16-4 and head into game two with momentum.
Box Score Game One
Due to the continued game before, the second game of the day was only seven innings.
The second game got kicked off with an RBI single from Colin Summerhill. Summerhill has started the last three games with a two-out RBI hit in the first inning. He is third all-time in franchise history for most RBIs in a single season with 46.
The Growlers answered in the third off Traverse City's All-Star Aren Gustafson. Anthony Stephan tripled home three runs to give his team a 3-1 lead. The bats went silent until the sixth and they woke up in a big way.
Glenn Miller and Tchavdarov led off with back-to-back singles. Dallas Duarte sacrificed the runners over to second and third. Alec Atkinson singled to right to make it a one-run game. With Evan Orzech up, Atkinson stole second and drew the throw. On the throw, Tchavdarov broke for home, sliding in safely to tie the game. With two outs, Marshall Toole tripled in the right-center field gap to make it a 4-3 Pit Spitter lead.
Mitch White entered for the seventh. He walked one, struck out one and locked down the win for Traverse City. He took the team lead in saves with his fifth of the season and moved into third in franchise history for single season saves. He hasn't allowed an earned run in his last five appearances.
Box Score Game Two
The Pit Spitters wrap up the season series with the Growlers in a Sunday matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 ET.
