Spitfires Weather Storm, Win 7-4

The Spitfires gained an early lead and never looked back as they led the Storm all night. The Spitfires used their speed and made a lot of plays in transition for the win.

In the first period, the Spitfires attacked the Storm with lots of speed and were rewarded with the games first goal. Just 53 seconds in, Christopoulos scored his 42nd of the year from the slot with a wicked shot. The Storm shot themselves in the foot with a delay of game penalty and the Spitfires went to work. The puck bounced in front of the goal and landed on the stick of Peer who scored his 19th of the season. And the Spitfires were up 2-0 just under 3 minutes into the game. 6 minutes later Maggio would add his 48th of the season to make it 3-0 after getting his own rebound after Leaver made a fantastic save. Just four minutes later, a bit of run and gun play as the Storm hit the post and then the Spitfires went the other way as Wright found Christopoulos for a breakaway and he cashed in on his 2nd of the night for a 4-0 lead. The Storm would respond just a minute and a half after the Spitfires 4th goal to make it a 4-1 game. The Spitfires had a 12-8 shot advantage after the first period.

In the second period, the Christopoulos train kept rolling as Alex would score his hat-trick goal. His 43rd of the season made it 5-1 just over two minutes into the frame. The Storm would respond just 30 seconds later to make it 5-2. Late in the second, the Storm would score to make it a 5-3 game on the powerplay. The Storm had a narrow 22-21 shot advantage after 2 periods.

In the third period, the Spitfires had a parade to the sin bin and were lucky not to give up a goal. The luck was in the hands of the Spitfires as they scored just before the halfway point in the period shorthanded. It was Maillet's 22nd of the season which gave the Spitfires a 6-3 lead. Late in the game the Spitfires would add an empty netter from Wright to make it 7-3. With under 3 minutes to play Guelph would score on a 5 on 3 powerplay to make it a 7-4 game. That would do it as the Spitfires would hang onto the 3 goal lead.

The Spitfires are back in action tomorrow Saturday March 11th when the Kitchener Rangers come to town. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm.
