WINDSOR, ON. - The Spitfires fell in overtime last night out to the Flint Firebirds by a score of 3-2. The Spitfires were in much needed of a win on Sunday to close the gap for the final playoff spot. The extra time has not been kind to the Spitfires as they have only mustered two wins and seven losses (OT and shootout combined). On Sunday the division leading Soo Greyhounds were in town for a Sunday afternoon clash, they were in on a two-game winning streak heading into the game.

In the first period, both teams committed a few turnovers and had their offensive chances however the goalies stood tall. The Spitfires were able to break the deadlock first. With just under four minutes to play, Toure got the puck from Morneau in the neutral zone and went for a skate uncontested through the Soo zone and sniped his first goal as a Spitfire. Late in the period the Spitfires would get back to back penalties and go on the PK. They were able to kill off the first one as the second one went into the second period. The shots were 9-5 in favour of the Soo.

In the second period, the Spitfires would pile on the gas. A four goal period for the Spitfires had them up 5-0 after 40 minutes. Nesbitt scored his 6th followed by Eichler with his 4th. Special teams were huge as Greentree would net his 29th goal of the season on the powerplay which chased the tender Schenkel. A few minutes later Spellacy scored shorthanded for his 14th on the year. The Spitfires trailed in shots 18-15 after forty minutes.

In the third period, the Spitfires would get a little relaxed with a large lead. The Soo would score two goals within the first five minutes to cut the lead to 5-2. The Spitfires would respond with a powerplay goal from Davis for his 18th of his rookie season. The Soo would add two more goals late in the game but the Spitfires would hang on for the 6-4 win.

The Spitfires are back in action tomorrow Monday Feb 19th as they travel to London for a matchup with the London Knights. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:00pm.
