Spitfires Snap 8-Game Losing Streak; Win 5-2 Over Petes

November 23, 2023 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Windsor Spitfires News Release

The Spitfires needed to right the ship after the team suffered its 8th consecutive loss last time out vs the Rangers. The Spitfires have been in a bit of turmoil coming into this game as Jerrod Smith was relieved of his duties on Monday and consequently Delmore and Leighton resigned. Newcomer Casey Torres who was added as an assistant in August was named as interim Head Coach on Tuesday. The Spitfires General Manager Bill Bowler and Casey Torres led the bench on Thursday in Peterborough.

In the first period, the Spitfires looked dominant in the offensive zone as they had numerous opportunities to score but Bowen stood tall for the Petes. Just over 5 minutes in, the Spitfires were able to break through. Maillet took the puck end to end and split the D before scoring his 6th of the year to give the Spitfires a 1-0 lead. Both goalies had a lot of action as the Spitfires fired 21 shots to the Petes' 14. With under 4 minutes to play in the frame, the Spitfires doubled their lead. Greentree got the puck to Outwater and he was checked off the puck but the puck landed on the stick of Maillet and he went fore-hand to backhand and roofed his second goal of the night.

In the second period, the Petes would come flying out of the gates and grab two quick goals within the first eight minutes and we were tied at 2. Just five minutes later, the Spitfires responded shorthanded. The puck was chipped out to center ice and Cole Davis sped past the Pete's defenceman and went in on the breakaway and scored to put the Spitfires up 3-2. It was Davis's 10th of the season and was the lone Spitfire goal in the period. After 40 minutes, the Spitfires led in shots 30-27 and on the scoreboard 3-2.

In the third period, the Spitfires would shut it down and play solid for the final twenty minutes while adding two goals. With just over 5 minutes left, newcomer Valentin Zhugin would snipe his first as a Spitfire to make it a 4-2 game. It was his 10th on the year and was assisted by Davis. In the final few minutes, the Spitfires would score on the empty net shorthanded by Peer. The Spitfires would snap an 8 game losing streak and win their 5th game of the season with a final score of 5-2.

The Spitfires are back in action tomorrow Friday November 24th in Kingston. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm.
