Windsor Spitfires News Release
WINDSOR, ON.
The puck luck hasn't been on the Spitfires side for most of this season. The Spitfires were 10 seconds away from gaining an all-important point but ultimately fell to a goal by the Spirit and lost 6-5.
In the first period, the Spitfires struck first under two minutes into the game. Dionicio carried the puck in over the offensive blue line and found Christopoulos on the back door. His initial shot was stopped but he got his own rebound and buried it. The Spitfires would have one opportunity on the powerplay but fail to convert. The Spitfires led 1-0 on the scoreboard and 10-6 in shots after 20 minutes.
In the second period, the Spirit scored twice in the first two minutes to take a 2-1 lead. Just seven minutes later, Eichler got out of the box after taking a penalty and was sprung on a 2 on 1 break. He decided to keep it and scored his first career OHL goal to tie the game at 2. Less than two minutes later, the Spirit would restore the lead and go up 3-2. Late in the frame, Saginaw would double their lead and take a 4-2 lead heading into the intermission.
In the third period, the fans needed to hold onto their seats as it was a wild ride to the finish. Just under eight minutes in, Greentree sprung Davis in on a breakaway and he scored his 6th of the season. Six minutes later, Hay would score to make it 5-3 for the Spirit. In the final five minutes, it was all offence for the Spitfires as they looked to cut the lead in halfway. The Spitfires were awarded a powerplay as Greentree was tripped up. On the ensuing powerplay, it would be Greentree scoring with a wicked wrister top shelf from Peer and Dionicio. It was Dionicio's 100th career OHL point. It was now a 5-4 score with just 3:34 remaining. With under a minute to go, the Spitfires would pull the goalie for the extra attacker and it paid dividends as the Spitfires would tie the game. Greentree got the puck to Dionicio at the point and he shot it on the net and the rebound popped to Davis in the slot and he scored his 2nd of the night to tie the game at 5 with 52 seconds to play. Unfortunately, the tie game would only last 42 seconds as the Spirit would score with 9 seconds left off a bounce off the end boards and a short-side shot. The Spirit would go on to win the game 6-5.
The Spitfires are back in action on Thursday for 3 games in 3 nights. Owen Sound visit the WFCU Centre for Rock N' Roll night, with puck drop at 7:05pm. On Friday the Spitfires hit the road to Kitchener for a battle with the Rangers. Puck drop is at 7:00pm. On Saturday the Spitfires return home for Boxing Night vs the Rangers, puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm.
