December 28, 2023 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Windsor Spitfires News Release
The Spitfires were looking to continue their winning momentum after they won in a shootout versus Owen Sound ahead of the Christmas break. In a penalty filled game, the Spitfires would go ice fishing this December and come up with a big 5-3 win over the Steelheads.
In the first period, both teams were a little undisciplined as five penalties were called in the frame. The Spitfires were sent to the box first and the Steelheads would take advantage of it. A point shot went wide and off the end boards to the stick of Jack Van Volsen and he scored his 6th on the season. The lead would last just four minutes as the Spitfires would respond. Woodall got the puck to Abraham and he found Greentree wide open in the slot and he would score his team leading 20th goal. Another four and a half minutes later, the Spitfires would strike on their first powerplay of the period. Peer scored a beauty from Greentree and Cristoforo to make it 2-1. Six minutes later, the Spitfires would score on the powerplay again going a perfect 2/2 in the period. Cristoforo shot the puck on goal and Maillet would pick up the rebound and score his 10th goal of the season. Less than forty seconds later the Steelheads would respond and make it 3-2 game. The Spitfires had a 13-10 shot advantage after 20 minutes of play.
In the second period, both teams were still undisciplined as the parade to the box continued on both sides. The Spitfires had a double minor powerplay chance but could not solve the Steelheads goaltender. Just after the powerplay expired, Windsor was sent to the penalty kill. On the ensuing penalty kill, Mancini made a long stretch pass to Peer and he went in on a breakaway and went forehand-backhand for his 21st of the season which gave the Spitfires a 4-2 lead. After the goal, the Steelheads took another penalty and we went to 4 on 4 hockey before a brief Spitfires powerplay. The Spitfires Greentree hit the post but the puck stayed out and it was back to event strength for both teams for the final six minutes. In the final two minutes, Greentree was taken down on a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot. He went in and appeared to score as he celebrated but the refs waved it off. They went upstairs on the phone and it was still no goal. The Spitfires led on the scoreboard 4-2 and 26-16 in shots.
In the third period, the Spitfires were sent to an early powerplay. After 15 seconds, the puck was stopped by the Mississauga goalie and held for a faceoff. After a long delay for rink maintenance the Spitfires capitalized off the faceoff. Abraham won the faceoff to Zhugin and his shot was stopped but Outwater on the rebound would score his third on the season and first as a Spitfire to make it 5-2. Late in the game the Steelheads would score to make it 5-3 but the Spitfires would hang on for the win!
Spitfires are back in action on December 30th as they travel to Saginaw for a matchup with the Spirit. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm. On Sunday December 31st the Spitfires are home to the Sarnia Sting for a 2pm New Years Eve Clash.
