Spitfires Fall to Sting 4-2 in Division Rivalry

WINDSOR, ON - The Spitfires were looking to improve as they fell to the hands of the Spirit last Sunday 5-2. The Sting were in town on Thursday for a division rivalry matchup. The Spitfires have gone 1-2-1 against the Sting so far this season and needed a big win to cut their lead in the standings. On Thursday the Spitfires could not cut into the Stings lead and ultimately fell by a final score of 4-2.

In the first period, it was a closely contested affair as both teams played each other hard. The Sting broke the ice with the games first goal just 5:45 into the game, it was Moses with his 8th on the year. The Spitfires would respond six and a half minutes later. Zhugin got the puck to Toure at the point and he shot the puck at the goal and Smith in front of the net deflected in his 9th on the year. With under five minutes to play in the frame, the Spitfires got into some penalty trouble as they had 3 guys in the box at once. They managed to kill them off and kept the scored tied after 20 minutes. The Spitfires had a 12-11 shot advantage after the first.

In the second period, it was all Sarnia as the Sting would net three goals from Cajkovic, Kostuch and Sikic and take a commanding 4-1 lead heading into the third period.

In the third period, the Spitfires tried to mount and comeback but fell short. Morneau scored on the powerplay to make it 4-2 with eight minutes left. The Spitfires had a bunch of pressure and pulled the goalie for the extra attacker but could not find the back of the net. They outshot the Sting 14-4 but ultimately lost the game 4-2. The Spitfires fell to 1-22-0 when trailing after two periods of play.

The Spitfires are back in action on Sunday when they head to Sarnia for a 7:05pm puck drop for YourTV Hockey Day in the OHL.
