Spitfires Fall to Sarnia 7-4

The Sarnia Sting travelled to Windsor for the 2nd game of the home and home series. The Spitfires were coming off a big 5-4 win in OT that seen them improve to 4-0-0 against the Sting this season. The Spitfires' were looking to improve on last night's effort.

In the first period, the Sting got on the board first, a blocked shot travelled up in the air and went over Piiroinen into the net, making it 1-0. Just three minutes later, Sarnia scored again and made it 2-0. However, the Spitfires responded, Angle picked the puck up on the half-wall and ripped it towards the net, Purboo deflected it up over the goalie to make it a 2-1 hockey game. Shots were tied at 12 after the first period.

In the second period, the Spitfires tied the game up at two apiece when Playfair smacked home a rebound from a Maggio shot. Zito had the secondary assist. However, Sarnia got the lead back late in the second period on the powerplay to make it a 3-2 after 40 minutes. Spitfires led in shots 30-24 after two periods.

In the third frame, the Sting got two quick goals within 2 minutes of each other to make it a 5-2 game. But the Spitfires were relentless. They came back with two goals of their own from Johnston and Afanasyev to bring the game within one. But that wasn't enough, Sarnia scored an insurance goal and added an empty netter. Spitfires lost tonight's contest by a score of 7-4.

The Spitfires' next three games are on the road as they head east. The first is Thursday, February 13th as they travel to Peterborough for a matchup with the Petes, puck drop at 7:05 pm. Then on Friday, Feb. 14th they're in Kingston for a 7:00 pm game. Following that, they have a break on Saturday, and Sunday, the Spitfires are in Ottawa for a 2:00 pm game.
