Windsor Spitfires News Release

WINDSOR, ON - The Spitfires were coming off a good weekend going 2-1 and a big win over the Owen Sound Attack last time out as they won convincingly 7-4. The Bulldogs were coming off an even more convincing win as they handled the Petes with ease and won 11-1. On Thursday the Spitfires gained a much needed point but failed to get the second one as they lost in a shootout 5-4.

In the first period, the Spitfires struck first and early. Just over a minute in a 2 on 1 Spellacy tried to pass to Smith on the back door but the puck bounced into the net for Spellacy's 12th of the season. Morneau and Walton had the assists on the goal. Just six minutes later, the Spitfires would double their lead. Abraham scored his 21st on a scramble in front of the net and a yawning cage as the Bulldogs goaltender was out of position by the great passing of Davis and Greentree who recorded assists on the goal. After the period, the Spitfires trailed in shots 14-7.

In the second period, it was the same story as the last few games, a disastrous second period for the Spitfires. The Spitfires would be penalized twice and one being a four minute but both penalties would be killed off. Brantford would score two goals in the frame to tie the game up at 2. The Spitfires had a penalty shot assessed against them and the Brantford player fanned and missed the net. The shots were 37-16 for the Bulldogs after 2 periods of play.

In the third period, it was a dogfight to the finish as both teams combined for 4 goals. The Bulldogs pulled ahead on the powerplay to make it a 3-2 game just a minute and a half into the period. A few minutes later, the Bulldogs would score and appear to have a 4-2 lead, however, after a review it determined the play was offside. Just forty seconds later, the Spitfires would tie the game 3. Abraham scored his 2nd of the night from a beautiful stretch pass from Walton. Six minutes later, the Spitfires regained the lead as Abraham netted a hat-trick off a bounce off the defenseman and into the net. The lead would last just 36 seconds as the Bulldogs would respond. After sixty minutes, we were tied and off to OT.

In the overtime frame, no one could break loose and score the games winning goal. We were headed to a shootout.

In the shootout, both Bulldogs would score as the Spitfires would be stopped and the Bulldogs would take home the 2nd point with a 5-4 win in the shootout.

The Spitfires are back in action on Saturday in Flint. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00pm.
