Windsor Spitfires News Release
WINDSOR, ON.
The Spitfires were looking to put the right foot forward after a slow start to the 2023-24 campaign. Windsor fell to Sarnia 8-2 in the season opener and had a tough test on Saturday night as Guelph came to town. The Spitfires had quite a few opportunities but they went by the wayside and ultimately lost 4-2.
In the first period, the Spitfires were able to get on the board first. As a Guelph powerplay expired, Greentree stole the puck off of a Storm defenceman and went in alone on a breakaway and made no mistake going forehand-backhand for his 2nd goal of the season. The lead would last for just 3 minutes as Guelph would respond with a point shot that was deflected in front by McKenzie for his 1st goal of the season. Both teams would go 0/1 on the powerplay in the period. Shots were 10-5 in favour of Guelph after the first period.
In the second frame, Castle would pick up a holding call and send thew Spitfires to a PK just over two minutes in. The Spitfires PK was rock solid and as Castle got out of the box, the puck bounced to the neutral zone where he picked it up and skated in on a breakaway and scored five-hole to give the Spitfires a 2-1 lead. Again, three minutes later the Storm would tie it at 2. Another four minutes later, Guelph would score shorthanded to take their first lead of the game on an error by Costanzo as he gave the puck away. Just two and a half minutes after that, Guelph would add to their tally with a powerplay goal.
In the third period, both teams would trade a few chances and both failed to capitalized on a powerplay chance. The Storm would ride-out a 4-2 win for their 2nd win on the season.
The Spitfires are back in action on Thursday October 5th as the North Bay Battalion come to town. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm.
