Windsor Spitfires News Release

The Spitfires took down the Sting with ease on Thursday evening with a big 5-1 win and the teams 8th straight.

In the first period, the Spitfires scored the lone goal of the period just over 3 minutes in. On the powerplay, Johnston passed to Zito who cut to the net before drop-passing to Maggio who ripped home his 36th on the season. The Spitfires led in shots 10-6 after 20 minutes.

In the second period, the Spitfires extended their lead. Johnston chipped the puck out of the zone and went in 2 on 1 and elected to shoot and fire a laser beam over the shoulder of Gaudreau for a shorthanded goal and giving the Spits a 2-0 lead. 10 minutes after the goal, the Spitfires were back on the powerplay Henault found Johnston on the right side boards who fired a cross ice feed to Maggio who on one-knee one-timed it in, giving the Spitfires a three goal cushion. However, just over a minute later Sarnia responded and made it 3-1. The Sting had quite the offensive pressure after that but that was the only goal that would be scored by the Sting in this one.

In the third period, the Spitfires scored two more to confidently win this one. Cuylle scored just over nine minutes in as he rushed from the Spitfires end to the Sting end alone as the Spits made changes. He sniped his 39th on the season just above the pad and below the glove. Maillet and Currie had assists on the goal. Just two and a half minutes later, Renwick unleashed a howitzer slapshot for his 10th on the season from D'Amico and Abraham to make it 5-1. The Spitfires won their 8th straight and extended the lead a top of the Western Conference as well as winning their 13th straight on home ice.

The Spitfires are back in action on Friday in Kitchener for a 7:30pm puck drop as well as Saturday in Owen Sound for another 7:30pm start.
