
Spitfires Do the Double, Beat Spirit 5-3

The Spitfires took down the Spirit twice in 48 hours as they travelled across the border and won in Saginaw 5-3 Saturday evening.
In the first period, the Spitfires would get on the board in quick fashion. Off an offensive zone draw, the puck was won back to the point Renwick passed it across to Holmes whos shot hit the post right to Greentree's stick and scored his 13th of the season. Just a minute and a half later, a 2 on 1 developed for the Spitfires with Maillet and Peer. Maillet passed it to Peer backdoor for his 15th of the season and the Spitfires had a 2-0 lead in the first 5 minutes of play. Late in the period, the Spirit would score on the powerplay to make it a 2-1 game. The Spitfires led 18-8 in shots after the period.
In the second period, the Spitfires had 48 seconds to work with on a powerplay and they converted. A pass from Harrison to Wright in the slot and he scored his 2nd of the season to give the Spitfires a 3-1 lead. A few minutes later, the Spirit would score to make it a 3-2 game. A few more minutes later, the Spitfires would respond. A puck dumped into the Spirit zone bounced onto the stick of Morneau who released a sharp angle shot and snuck its way in for a 4-2 Spitfires lead. The Spitfires had a 24-20 shot advantage after 2 periods.
In the third period, the Spirit had a push back and score halfway through the period to make it a 4-3 game. The Spitfires would play solid defence and then finish the game off with an empty netter by Harrison to make it 5-3. Both goaltenders were fantastic all night and this game could have been a lot different.
The Spitfires are back in action tomorrow Sunday January 15th at 2:00pm in London.
