New Haven County Cutters News Release
A night after being shut out by the New Haven County Cutters, the North Shore Spirit left no doubt in anyone?s mind why they are one of the most feared lineups in the Can-Am League, crushing the home team 12-6 on Wednesday night at Yale Field. The loss snapped a four-game win streak by the Cutters.
The most telling stat of the game was the hit total; each team had 13 hits but the Spirit got theirs early and mostly with runners on base. They had two doubles, a triple and a pair of home runs, one each for Brian Macchi and Vic Davilla. Their four-baggers came in the fifth inning and chased Cutters starter Jarrett Stawarz from the game.
Stawarz lasted four and one third innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits. His control was shaky all night as he walked three batters, hit two and tossed two wild pitches.
Facing the league's leader in wins, Bryan Morse, the Cutters knew runs were going to come at a premium. He earned his 12th victory of the year with a workmanlike performance, hurling six innings and allowing three earned runs. He was pitching with a big lead and it showed, as he threw strikes and forced the Cutters to put the ball in play. Until the fifth inning, it worked wonders, as he did not allow a hit until the 14th batter he faced.
Andy Howdeshell and Macchi both collected three hits and drove in three runs to lead the way for the North Shore outfit. Macchi's blast was his sixth of the season, while Davilla blasted his team high 21st of the year. The Spirit lead the Can-Am League in home runs with 86.
Runs in the fifth, sixth and ninth innings made the score more respectable for the Cutters. Two Cutters appeared to have broken out of recent hitting funks. Both Keith Stegbauer and Derrick Gibson had three hits in defeat.
The rubber match of the three-game set is on Thursday at 7:05. It is Thirsty Thursday ($1 beers) along with Singles Night. Brad Whitworth (4-3) looks to quiet the Spirit?s bats for the Cutters. North Shore counters with 10-game winner John Kelly (10-4).
