New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ A power surge from the bat of designated hitter Jose Salas led the Jackals to a 9-2 victory and series sweep over the Elmira Pioneers Wednesday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.

In a span of six innings, Salas went deep from both sides of the plate, finishing with 5 RBI. The hitting outburst was not limited to Salas however, as Francisco Lebron, Ricardo Cordova and Zach Smithlin combined to go 7-for-12.

Salas got the scoring started in the bottom of the second with an RBI groundout that plated Steve Checksfield, who had legged out a triple to start the frame. Subsequent run-scoring hits by Horace Lawrence and Smithlin gave the Jackals a 3-0 lead they would never relinquish.

The scrappy Pioneers would answer back with two of their own in the top of the third on a two-run single by Amauri Casana. New Jersey starter Joe Orloski would not allow another run after that, as he cruised to his sixth victory of the year.

Orloski finished up with eight innings pitched on only 108 pitched, striking out nine. He allowed seven hits and two runs, but neither was earned.

New Jersey posted three in the fourth and three more in the seventh off the strength of Salas to close out the scoring.

Pioneer centerfielder Toshi Suzuki finished with two hits and a run scored to pace Elmira.

The Jackals begin a three-game series at Yogi Berra Stadium with a doubleheader Friday night at 5:05 p.m. For tickets and other information, please call the Jackals Ticket Office at 973-746-7434 or visit www.jackals.com.
