Washington Spirit News Release
Boyds, Md. - The Washington Spirit is proud to name Sandy Spring Bank as the team's first-ever official banking partner. The Spirit and Sandy Spring Bank finalized their partnership at the end of 2019, but postponed a public announcement due to the coronavirus pandemic and the NWSL's ensuing season delay.
Through the new partnership, the two organizations will collaborate and demonstrate their ongoing support and investment in important programs and organizations throughout the Greater Washington D.C. region. The Washington Spirit and Sandy Spring Bank will work together on community work and volunteerism efforts, such as leading financial literacy seminars.
Sandy Spring Bank will also receive a variety of public awareness opportunities, including having its logo on the sleeves of all player jerseys, which will make their first appearance during the NWSL 2020 Challenge Cup in Herriman, Ut. later in June, and will be unveiled on June 25.
"I'm delighted to welcome Sandy Spring Bank to the Spirit Family. They are a pillar in our community, providing banking services to our region for more than 150 years," said Washington Spirit Owner Steve Baldwin. "Their brand represents excellence in all they do - from serving their customers to their recognition as a great place to work. They are the perfect partner for us, our values, and our fan base."
"We are honored to support these elite athletes in all of their work - on and off the field," said Sandy Spring Bank President and CEO Daniel J. Schrider. "The Washington Spirit play an exciting and competitive game, they are superior role models and ambassadors of the sport, and they are active and visible leaders in our community. Sports can be such an uplifting and unifying force, which is something our country and the Greater Washington region needs now more than ever."
Founded in 1868 and headquartered in Olney, Maryland, Sandy Spring Bank is the largest locally headquartered community bank in the Greater Washington D.C. area. Both the bank and the Sandy Spring Bank Foundation are active and engaged members of the community. Last year, bank employees volunteered more than 12,000 service hours in the community. Additionally, the Foundation recently donated $600,000 to D.C. area hospitals to support COVID-19 response efforts.
The bank has received numerous recognitions and awards over the course of its history, including being named a Top Workplace by The Washington Post and a Best-In-State Bank by Forbes.
