Saginaw Spirit News Release
Welcome to the first installment of "SPIRIT WEEKLY" The newsletter that keeps you fully engaged with all the happenings in Spirit Nation! Each week, we will be releasing news, game recaps, game previews, community engagements, player interviews, and much more.
In issue one, the Spirit have been red-hot as of late, winning six of their last nine games. We'll give you a full recap of last week's action as the Spirit finished off a five-game home stand winning four out of five games. It's back to the road for the Spirit this week, as Kitchener, Barrie, and Owen Sound wait. Saginaw is 8-8-1-1 just past the quarter pole of the 2015-16 Ontario Hockey League season.
THIS WEEK IN SPIRIT HOCKEY:
The Spirit had three games this past week, finishing up a five game home stand and heading on to Sarnia for a battle with the Sting. The boys of the Bay Region were looking for their second win of the season against West Division rival, Sault Ste. Marie on Wednesday night.
The Soo had a 4-1 lead going into the third period, but the never say die Spirit battled all the way back to tie the game on goals from Cole Coskey, Marcus Crawford, and Devon Paliani. Kris Bennett put the Spirit ahead late in the game and Will Petschenig put the Spirit out front for good, securing a 6-4 win.
On Saturday night, the Spirit welcomed the defending Mastercard Memorial Cup Champion Oshawa Generals to the Dow Event Center. The Spirit were looking for some retribution as they were swept in last season's series with the Gens. The back-and-forth battled continued throughout the game until the Spirit took their first lead of the game with only 2:52 to go on a power play tally by Matt Kreis. The Spirit held on to win, 4-3. David Ovsjannikov made 30 saves in the win.
Sunday, the Spirit invaded the Sarnia Sports and Entertainment Centre for their first contest with the Sarnia Sting. The big guns for the Sting were controlling the tempo and the play, outshooting the Spirit 19-2 in the first period. Jacob Chychrun scored the only goal of the period as the Spirit remained in striking distance. In the third, the Spirit cut a 2-0 lead for Sarnia to 2-1 on a point shot by Keaton Middleton. Alex Black put the finishing touches on a 3-1 advantage for Sarnia.
